Race Services

This page contains general information about USSA services and Split Second Timing (SST), the widely used timing software for USSA competitions. (Other timing software can of course be used, Split Second is simply the most commonly used in the FW division.) Go directly to the Far West Masters race services page for detailed instructions, membership reports, and Split Second setup files for FWM division races.

The procedures we describe are provided as guidelines. The techniques have been used in various forms by organizing areas in the Far West over a number of years and have been consolidated here to share the knowledge and ideas of many people. This is not the only way to do things, but we know the approach works and we believe is the simplest way to operate a FW masters race. Please use our suggested procedures and data files, it should make your life easier.

USSA Member and Race Lookup Services

Most current USSA masters will be listed in the points list file, updated periodically throughout the season by USSA. For the most current information, however, use the Member Lookup feature on the USSA Alpine web site:
   USSA Member Lookup

To check the race code assigned by USSA, use the Race Lookup feature on the USSA Alpine web site:
   USSA Alpine Race Lookup

USSA Masters Points Lists

USSA publishes a masters points list data file containing all licensed USSA masters competitors periodically throughout the season. The masters points list file can be used with the Split Second Timing software to assist in correctly entering racer information such as name, age, and USSA license number when inserting competitors in a Masters Alpine race data file.

The masters points list is scheduled to be published regularly during the 2007-2008 competition season, starting in November and updated at the start of each month. Expected publication dates when new lists will be available for download from the USSA web site are:

  • MAS108 - 01-Nov-2007
  • MAS208 - 28-Dec-2007
  • MAS308 - 15-Feb-2008  < -- current **
  • MAS408 - TBA
  • MAS508 - TBA

The masters points list file is available for download from the USSA web site using the Masters Points List download page at ussa.org (click on the link to the masters points list .ZIP file to download). See the Split Seconds Tips page entry Installing Points Lists Files if you want to download and use the points list with the Split Second timing software.

Note: there have been some difficulties reported with the masters points list download link on the ussa.org points list download page. If the link does not initiate a download of the .zip file, use Split Second's points list download feature to obtain the file.

General Information about Timing System Software Procedures

Most race organizers in the Far West division use the standard USSA alpine race timing software from Split Second, Inc. Consequently, the techniques we describe here are specifically for the Split Second race timing software. Equivalent techniques for encoding masters age classes and performing race operation activities such as producing entry list, start list, and race result reports can be used with other race timing systems.

A detailed description of running USSA Masters races in general and Far West Masters races in particular using the Alpine Race Scoring Software from Split Second is provided in:

This document is fairly long and is probably too detailed for most readers. It muddles together variations of how to perform certain operations depending on what kind of masters race is being run (FW division, Intermountain division, USSA regional/national competition, etc), so the material can be hard to follow for someone who just wants to know what to do (not why). It makes all this race setup and operation look more complicated that it really is.

Browse the material briefly if interested in background information, gory details of procedures for Split Second operation, notes on issues and problem areas, explanations of why one technique was preferred over other possible approaches, etc. It's probably best used as a reference to come back to when a specific problem situation is encountered.

See following sections for simpler versions of this information which provide a summary checklist of the recommended procedure.
